What is a Tablet PC?

A Tablet PC is a slate-style or notebook/laptop form factor mobile computer, equipped with a touch screen or graphics tablet/screen hybrid technology which allows the user to operate the computer with a stylus or digital pen, or a fingertip, instead of a keyboard or mouse. Tablet PCs can be standard, consumer grade meant for individuals and certain professional, white collar type of environments. Some Tablet PCs are rugged – built to withstand harsh environments usually in a business, blue collar worker setting in a mobile environment. A slate style Tablet PC offers benefits of more natural portability with ways to input information while standing and being “mobile.” The slate style can offer extended data collection capabilities – like integrated bar-code scanning, credit card reader, camera, and others. A notebook/laptop form factor Tablet PC usually offers a convertible feature to allow its use as a notebook, but then converts to a slate style with a hinge mechanism.
